Ofsted Report

Ofsted Inspectors have declared Woodside High School in Haringey to be an ‘Outstanding’ school for the second time. Since the introduction of the tougher new inspection framework, only a handful of schools have achieved this rating.

The report states that: “Achievement is outstanding” and that “students’ progress in English and mathematics is significantly faster than the progress of students in most schools.” It praises Woodside’s emphasis on student well-being, noting that “Students are very safe at school. Students’ well-being is at the heart of the school’s ethos” and adds that “Students’ behaviour is outstanding. Students are happy and proud to attend the school, demonstrating excellent attitudes to learning.”

Ofsted comments positively on the outstanding teaching and curriculum saying: “Most teaching is outstanding and teachers have the highest expectations for their students. Teachers constantly work with students to achieve the very best.”

In addition, Ofsted praises the leadership, staff and Governors: “The Headteacher sets the highest expectations, supported by leaders at all levels, who share the desire to constantly improve. Governors provide both challenge and support and have a very clear vision for the school’s future direction.”

Our Headteacher at the time of the Ofsted inspection, Dame Joan McVittie, said: “To have our school recognised as ‘outstanding’ is fantastic and a testament to the dedication and skills of our exceptional team and the support of our governors and families. We are determined to build on the successes achieved to date and to continue to drive up our students’ achievements within a positive, challenging and supportive environment.”

As a school we are always reviewing and appraising our own practice. As part of the Challenge Partners Network of Excellence, we invite an external team of senior practitioners to undertake a thorough review of our work. In addition to conducting a full review of all aspects of the school, this is also an opportunity to showcase areas of excellence. This year, it was equality and diversity and last year it was mental health and emotional well-being

"The positive relationships between staff and students allow for a highly effective learning environment. Students are mutually supportive of each other and are not afraid to take risks in their learning. They are exceedingly proud of their school and when one was asked if he liked his school, he promptly responded, “Yes – 100%!”"

"Behaviour for learning is excellent in lessons because teachers have high expectations of students who aspire to meet these expectations. This is reinforced by excellent behaviour around the school where students are courteous, wear their uniform immaculately and respond quickly to staff requests."

"The school’s drive to embody a more open attitude to diversity, and therefore counter negativity, is seen in the shared values that permeate the school. Celebrating differences, raising self-esteem and embracing diversity are behind many of the initiatives that the school becomes involved in, such as Stonewall and LGBT History Month."
